Release Date: 07 Nov 2017
Lamborghini Terzo Millennio 3-4 Rear

Automakers are fast becoming technology companies... with a little help from their friends. In the face of technological and cultural changes that have unleashed the need for greener and smarter cars, auto giants aren’t shying away from collaborations to get the necessary expertise. Here are 3 great examples:-

1)    Lamborghini Terzo Millennio: A Future Vision Based on the Collaboration with MIT

The technological goal of the project is to enable Lamborghini to address the future of the super sports car in five different dimensions: energy storage systems, innovative materials, propulsion system, visionary design, and emotion.

Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, says: “Collaborating with MIT for our R&D department is an exceptional opportunity to do what Lamborghini has always been very good at: rewriting the rules on super sports cars". He adds: "We are inspired by embracing what is impossible today to craft the realities of tomorrow.”

2)    SEAT and Telefónica to Promote Digitalisation in the Auto Industry

The two Spanish companies have agreed to collaborate in three major areas of work: the shared use of insights to design optimised approaches to solutions for mobility; the application of 5G connectivity in the connected car and developing digital transformation projects as an integral part of the car manufacturing process.

“Joining forces with Telefónica as a strategic partner enables us to take a major step forward in our commitment to offering mobility solutions that make lives easier for the drivers of our vehicles” says SEAT President Luca de Meo.

3)  SEAT and Champion Motors create XPLORA, a Partnership on Technological Innovation in Israel

SEAT and its Israeli brand importer Champion Motors Ltd., have created XPLORA, a team of specialists based in Tel Aviv focused on innovation projects aimed at the connected car and smart mobility services. The goal of the initiative is to encourage relations with local mobility-related startups and identify innovative projects that could lead to future solutions for the brand.

Collaboration may be the way forward for some companies but others continue to develop new technologies by relying on their in-house teams. Some recent examples of great in-house achievements are the following:-

1)   Hyundai Motor Group Reveals Next-Generation Powertrain Strategy

Developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s award-winning engineers, the Smart Stream powertrains deliver improved fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions. The improvements will enhance petrol and diesel engine efficiency.

2)   Innovative Anti-Theft Protection Now for Porsche Classic Vehicles

GPS-assisted monitoring is on its way. Porsche is currently developing an anti-theft protection system for all classic models, allowing owners of Porsche classics to take advantage of the anti-theft protection that is already available for its new vehicles.
