ANCHOR LEAD: He was the inspiration behind the 2002 movie Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and he has spent the last 40-years helping the FBI catch the bad guys who are ripping you off. Brian Osuch has more on how you can outsmart the bad guys. (:59) SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. Technology is making identify theft easier these days. So easy, scammers can steal your identity in as little as 15 seconds! Frank W. Abagnale is the world's most respected authority on forgery, and he has joined forces with AARP's Fraud Watch Network. He says there are a few things you can do to protect you and your family from fraud. CUT: (Abagnale) Number one, I do use a shredder. I shred everything, because what you believe to be worthless is of great value to someone else. I do use a credit monitoring service, because they monitor all three monitoring bureaus: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion. They notify me in real time. And third, I don't write a lot of checks. On the check is my name, address and phone number, my account number at that bank, my routing number into my account. My signature on the signature card at that bank. And then the clerk has written down my state drivers license number and my date of birth. SCRIPT: For more information, go to AARP.org. That's Newsbreak from AARP. I'm Brian Osuch.
