SOUNDBITE 1, Alain Oppliger, Sustainable Development Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 28 sec): “The logistics centre in Nairobi is one of the biggest in the ICRC – in fact is THE biggest for the ICRC. We have about 6,000 square metres, we have 170 people working there; we covered up to 30 different countries last year, and we deliver food and non-food items to different places, especially in Africa." SOUNDBITE 2, Alain Oppliger, Sustainable Development Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 53 sec): “Energy supply, so far, we were very pragmatic on the way we did that – that means we used a generator where there is no supply. // And we wanted to be more efficient on this. And one of the bright ideas was to use the energy that we produced with the generator, the extra energy, and to store it in a battery. Another one would be to use solar panels to charge this kind of battery kit, and afterwards to use this when we can switch off the generator. The problem is we don’t know how to do this kind of stuff. But some years ago, I saw that the new technology for us is this microgrid system, and it’s exactly what does this kind of stuff. That means they take the different supplies of energy, and they manage this energy, and they supply according to its needs.” SOUNDBITE 3, Alain Oppliger, Sustainable Development Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 27 sec): “We had a meeting at that time to try to see if we can have some cooperation in different fields of activities. It was not obvious at all, and we discussed different aspects of our jobs, and we discovered that that can be a place where we can work together. Because we wanted to have this kind of stuff; ABB has the expertise for this, and we are ready to cooperate and try a pilot project with this.” SOUNDBITE 4, Alain Oppliger, Sustainable Development Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 50 sec): “I think in Africa, what we can say is that the energy supply is by far not enough. I mean, you cover maybe a thirds of the needs of the people for energy supply, and maybe you cover most of them in the city, in urban places, but outside the city there is just no energy at all because there are no grids to distribute this energy. And when you have the renewable energy from the solar panels and this kind of stuff, you can imagine that you have your own energy supply from one place, a remote place, and you produce your energy on the spot, and you distribute and use it on the spot also, and you don’t need to be connected to the main grids.” SOUNDBITE 5, Alain Oppliger, Sustainable Development Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 8 sec): “I think it’s really the future for a small community living in a rural area. Yes, definitely, I think it’s a really good approach.” SOUNDBITE 6, Meggi Rombach, Corporate Partnership Team, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 22 sec): “The projhect is part of a bigger framework, which is our Corporate Support Group. ABB is one of the founding members, the group was founded in 2005. And since then, various exchanges have taken place, which include high-level dialogue, skill exchange, and now this new project which really falls into the area of innovation, so we’re really excited about this new project.” SOUNDBITE 7, Meggi Rombach, Corporate Partnership Team, International Committee of the Red Cross (English, 21 sec): "I would say not only us but the whole humanitarian sector in general has opened up more recently, acknowledging that these days the problems are simply too big for us to solve them alone, so more and more of this cross-sector collaboration with companies, but also in close collaboration with governments, has become more
