There’s not a lot you can do in fifteen seconds. Send a text message…make an espresso? What about…charging a whole bus? The new TOSA electric bus running in the city of Geneva does exactly that. In the time it takes passengers to get on and off at the stop, a laser-guided arm sends 600kilowatts straight into the onboard batteries. It’s a brand-new “flash-charging” technology developed by engineers at ABB. SOUNDBITE, Ulrich Spiesshofer, CEO, ABB: “Within 15 seconds we charge a small battery on top of the bus which allows propulsion up to the next bus station. With this lightweight battery, we save the transport capacity on the bus for the passengers, and not give it away for battery capacity.” For the local transport authority, it’s a huge step forward from alternative electric bus technologies which require buses to be charged overnight at the depot – or which carry such large batteries that space for actual passengers has to be sacrificed.
