Stuttgart, Germany. (August 11, 2012) adidas Outdoor, the athletic brand in the outdoors, and visionary climber, slackliner, BASE jumper and self-described aerialist Dean Potter announced a new partnership today at the 2012 adidas ROCKSTARS event at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. Potter, age 40, will join a team of the world’s most inspiring outdoor athletes that includes climbers Beat Kammerlander, Sasha DiGiulian and Alexander and Thomas Huber.
“We’re thrilled that Dean will be adding his diverse array of talents and visionary approach to the vertical world to the adidas Outdoor team,” said Axel Burkhardt, Head of Global Sports Marketing Olympic Sports, Cycling, Outdoor.
Potter, who has been climbing since 1988, gained acclaim for hard climbing across disciplines, from speed ascents on the Nose of El Capitan to 5.14/8b crack climbs in Utah to the first solo ascent of Cerro Torre in Patagonia. Increasingly, however, he has turned his focus to slacklining and BASE jumping, and the intersections between them. “Dean’s ability to blur the lines between these disciplines in a revolutionary way has made him into one of the world’s true ambassadors of the outdoor community,” continued Burkhardt.
Potter says he is excited to begin a relationship with adidas Outdoor. Interestingly, it was Beat Kammerlander who first introduced Potter to Deep Blue Sea (5.12+/7c), a 300+ meter route on the North face of the Eiger that Potter would go on to climb FreeBASE (ropeless but wearing a parachute in the event of a fall).
“The athlete team includes a number of my personal heroes of an older generation, as well as incredible young talent. This partnership will give me a chance to work towards my personal goals alongside climbers that have made and are making history.”
