ANCHOR LEAD: U.S. oil and natural gas companies are preparing to report their first quarter earnings. Brian Osuch has more on what this means to the average American. (:60) SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. The oil and natural gas industry is responsible for the livelihoods of millions in this country. Chief Economist for The American Petroleum Institute, John Felmy, says that's why it's important to support the industry's efforts as heavyweights including Exxon, Shell and BP get ready to announce their earnings. CUT: (Felmy) Each year, the oil and natural gas industry pumps four-hundred-plus-billion-dollars into America's economy. It goes to creating new jobs, wages for millions of Americans, and incomes to millions of retirees and other investors through their retirement accounts. It's three to four times what the industry earns in a year. SCRIPT: Felmy says we need to invest in becoming more energy independent. CUT: (Felmy) While the industry's earnings are measured in the billions, so are its enormous investments in new job creating energy projects, and the substantial taxes paid to our government. As we move forward, we need public policies encouraging oil and natural gas development here at home securing America's future. SCRIPT: For more, log onto Energy-Tomorrow-dot-org.
