CAUTION: Watching Sports Could Be Hazardous To Your Health
Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. Athletes know there's always the chance they could get hurt on the field. But did you know that just watching your favorite sports team play a game could trigger symptoms similar to a heart attack or worse? Vicki Greenberg is a Nursing program Manager at University of Phoenix. Vicki, what can happen to your body when watching a sporting event?
Well it's amazing what our bodies go through when watching a game. Watching a game can be stressful just like running from a fire. The body goes through chemical changes that mimic a fight or flight response and pumps out hormones which can increase heart rate, increase blood pressure, and actually chest pain in some people.
When should you seek medical attention?
Chest pain that can last more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. Pain up and down the left side of the neck and arm… dizziness, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting.
