Actress Hayden Panettiere on Recycling Denim for Communities in Need
That's why it's important to recycle your old jeans when you no longer like the way they fit or they are no longer in style. The Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program is unique – it upcycles old jeans into UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation. This denim insulation, with a portion, approximately 250,000 square feet provided to communities in need each year (mainly Habitat for Humanity affiliates), is composed of 85 percent recycled cotton fibers. It is environmentally safe, has 30% better sound absorption, resists mold and mildew and doesn't contain any volatile organic chemicals.
To date, the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program has received almost one million pieces of denim, resulting in approximately 2 million square feet of insulation. That's over 600 tons of denim diverted from landfills.
With being so close to receiving its millionth piece of denim for recycling, Cotton has teamed up with some celebrities with great style for The Great Denim Challenge – Celebrity Denim Auction for Blue Jeans Go Green™. Beginning September 17th people across America have the opportunity to bid on their favorite celebrities' self-autographed jeans. Celebrities will contribute their jeans to the auction for people to bid on. Bidding will utilize "denim currency" in that bidders will place their bids based on the number of pieces of denim they will contribute to the Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program. At the close of the auction (approximately November 3rd) the person who places the greatest bid of denim contributed on a particular pair of autographed celebrity jeans will be the recipient. All the denim will be recycled into insulation.
Hayden Panettiere, actress and national spokesperson for Cotton Incorporated's "The Fabric of Our Lives" campaign, talks about the recycling process, Blue Jeans Go Green™ and how by recycling jeans you can wind up with a pair of celebrities autographed jeans!
