audio package, .mp3
ANCHOR LEAD: As millions of Americans prepare to head into the New Year, there is one resolution you can make that can help save a life. Brian Osuch finds out you can start the year off with safer driving. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero-to Sixty, I'm Brian Osuch. (SFX: whistle and horns) Ringing in the New Year is something many of us look forward to doing with friends and family. But, many of this year's alcohol-related traffic fatalities will happen New Years Eve into New Years Day. GM's, James Bell says there are ways to keep loved ones safe and suggests planning ahead before getting behind the wheel. CUT: (Bell) If you know you're going to be drinking, plan to have a sober designated driver. If that isn't an option, call a cab service or use mass transit. You can even make arrangements for a friend or family member to pick you up. But, don't get behind the wheel if you were drinking. SCRIPT: Bell says safe roads are everyone's responsibility. CUT: (Bell) If you're hosting a New Year's Eve party, make sure you're serving more than alcoholic beverages. It's also a good idea to stop serving drinks to those who will be driving a few hours before they get into their cars. And be a good friend... how about offering a place to stay for those you think may have had a little too much. Above all, everyone should drink responsibly.
