ANCHOR LEAD: Think you have to pay outrageous prices to keep your family safe while behind the wheel… think again. Many American automakers are doing their part to make some of today’s most advanced car safety technologies affordable to average households. Brian Osuch has more. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero-to-Sixty, I’m Brian Osuch. These days, the latest in-vehicle safety systems are not just reserved for high-end luxury cars. Automobile Magazine compiled a list of the top ten most affordable vehicles with new active safety features. The Magazine’s Joe DeMatio… CUT: (DeMatio) Seven of the ten are from American carmakers. GM has the most – with four. SCRIPT: The Buick Encore and Chevy Malibu are two examples of mainstream cars featuring some of this new technology. But, GM’s James Bell says lets not forget about the top honor. CUT: (Bell) The Buick Verano was the number one most affordable vehicle that incorporates so many great active safety technologies. SCRIPT: And some of the latest safety features include… CUT: (Bell) Blind spot detective system – essentially there are sensors in the back of the car that are watching that little space that’s difficult to see. Another great feature is Lane Departure Warning system… this is watching the painted lines on the road as you’re driving, and you start to drift, it will alert you. And the feature that I think is absolutely priceless, is forward collision alert. A monitor that’s looking at the traffic up ahead of you. SCRIPT: For more, visit GM.com. That’s Zero-to-Sixty from GM.
