ANCHOR LEAD: Earth Day may have passed, but there are ways we can take action on a daily basis to reduce our own environmental footprint. Brian Osuch has something to think about before you get behind the wheel of your vehicle. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero to Sixty, I'm Brian Osuch. The automotive industry has invested time, energy and technology ensuring vehicles are operating more efficiently, GM's James Bell. CUT: (Bell) I think a great example of how the industry has changed is the Chevrolet Malibu. This is a return to the proper five passenger four door sedan. But, with this car we now have the fuel efficiency you would have seen in a compact or subcompact just a few years ago. Better than thirty-six miles per gallon. SCRIPT: Bell says GM is helping consumers recognize energy-efficient vehicles by introducing the ecologic sticker found on Chevrolet's Sonic. This sticker shows how a vehicle was made to be fuel and energy efficient and how it will drive. But, are there ways for the everyday driver to become more environmentally friendly? CUT: (Bell) When you come up to a stop sign, slow down in a nice mellow way. When you go to take off again, light pressure on the peddle and do it in a more mellow style. Check the air, not only the air in the tires, but also check the air filter. If the engine is not breathing well, good chance it's not going to be very efficient. SCRIPT: For more, log onto GM-dot-com. That's Zero to Sixty from GM.
