ANCHOR LEAD: The Fourth of July is a popular day many families use to travel all across America. But, before you pack up your car, Brian Osuch may just spark up a few ideas to keep you safe and closer to home. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero to Sixty, I’m Brian Osuch. (SFX: Fireworks) Many Americans celebrate the Fourth of July by heading out on a road trip. But, AAA’s Nance Cain says before you hit the highways… keep safety top of mind. CUT: (Cain) Always wear your seat belt. Don’t be a distracted driver; distractions are a very common cause of crashes. So be alert at the wheel, take breaks every three, four hours, and if you’ve got more than one driver, perhaps rotate drivers… certainly if you’re driving avoid alcohol. SCRIPT: Since the Fourth is this Friday, GM’s James Bell says many travelers are avoiding long distance trips. CUT: (Bell) I think a great idea is to actually look at some stuff that’s not so far away from home. It’s a good time to go to some of the landmarks in your local area, enjoy the local economy. And have a good time. SCRIPT: And as fireworks spark up the sky, Bell also says now’s a good time to think about another kind of spark - spark plugs. He says the spark plugs on your engine need to work properly to power your vehicle. Over time they wear out and this affects your engines performance. For more, log onto GM-dot-com. That’s Zero to Sixty from GM. I’m Brian Osuch.
