audio package, .mp3
ANCHOR LEAD: Is your car ready to hit the road this summer? Bobbi Owens has more with an automotive expert and a fuel economy expert with suggestions for getting the most out of your summer road trip. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero to Sixty, I'm Bobbi Owens. Now that summer is here a lot of people will be hitting the road taking summer getaways. Roger Clark is a Fuel Economy Expert. Roger, how can we conserve fuel during long road trips? CUT: (Clark) Speed is the biggest factor. For every ten miles an hour faster that you drive, you lose about four miles per gallon. Acceleration is a big factor and deceleration believe it or not. Those two things really have the biggest factor on your fuel economy, and saving in those areas, you can save up to 20-percent. On a typical month you might save a hundred dollars in gas. SCRIPT: James Bell is GM's Head of Consumer Affairs. James, are there any essential items that should be taken on road trips? CUT: (Bell) Bring along a safety kit with flares, reflectors and so forth. And secondly your cell phone. That's a real big link to the outside world. And more importantly bring along that car/cell phone charger as well. And of course in GM vehicles you've got the OnStar system built into every car so one little push of a blue button, help is on the way. SCRIPT: For more summer travel tips, visit gm-dot-com.
