ANCHOR LEAD: It’s the official kick off to summer… and often the official kick off to something else – long lines of traffic. But, there is a way to keep the family entertained and safe on a Memorial Day Weekend road trip. Brian Osuch has more. (:60) SCRIPT: Zero-to-Sixty, I’m Brian Osuch. Over the past two years more than thirty-million travelers drove to their Memorial Day Weekend destinations… and if this year follows suit, roadways will likely be backed up. GM’s James Bell says it’s best to stay calm. CUT: (Bell) If the stress level is down in the car, there’s a good chance you as the driver are going to be more in control of the vehicle and less opportunities for accidents. SCRIPT: Bell recommends keeping those in the car entertained. CUT: (Bell) A good idea is to bring plenty of toys for the kids and pack those up in an old used ice cream pale. Not only does that keep things contained so you don’t have toys rolling around in your foot well and so forth, but also the bucket makes a great place in case a child gets motion sick. SCRIPT: And there’s advice for those “certain” emergencies. CUT: (Bell) Bring along a few rolls of toilet paper and put some plastic bags inside the roll itself. Reason being, that if you do have any cleanups in the car, you’ve got an easy way to wipe it up. And incase the child can’t make it to the next gas station in time before they have to go to the restroom, well, gotta do one of those roadside stops… you’ve got a way to keep things clean.
