I'm Ingrid Hoffmann for the American Diabetes Association. Did you know that according to the CDC, Latinos are nearly twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as non-Latino whites? Maintaining a healthy weight and eating well is one of the most important things you can do to lower your risk for type 2 diabetes. It is essential to eat some fats, though it is harmful to eat too many. The fats you eat give your body the energy that it needs to work properly. But you should know that there are good fats and bad fats. Fresh avocados, for example, contribute good fat to your diet. They are also a great substitute for foods high in bad fat and are also cholesterol free. Fresh avocados provide 8% of the recommended daily value of fiber per serving. Diets rich in food containing fiber, like some vegetables and fruits, may help reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
