IBM and Akron Children's Hospital Pioneer Electronic Medical Records

February 18 marks the 50th anniversary of the first electronic medical records, which were installed at a children's hospital in Akron, Ohio. While conventional wisdom credits Dr. Larry Weed for the creating the Problem Oriented Medical Record in the late 1960s, it was actually Akron Children's Hospital that, in 1962, worked with IBM to build the first computer-based patient information system to centralize patient records, allow sharing of patient information, eliminate paperwork and alert nurses when patients needed their meds.
