Lamborghini Gears Up For A Sensational Weekend Of Racing At Thailand’s Destination Of Speed

Celebrated Italian super car manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini is gearing up for the second round of the Super Trofeo Asia series in 2017, to be held this coming weekend at Thailand’s FIA accredited Chang International Circuit in Buriram. The world renowned single make series returns to Thailand for the second time in two years, after the first ever Super Trofeo race in Thailand was held at the track in 2016.

The series has received growing interest from local drivers, with the return of Supachai Weeraborwornpong this year, who proved to be untouchable in Sepang with two class wins racing in the Lamborghini Cup class, along with PSC Motorsport’s Thai racing duo and brothers, Sarun and Saravut Sereethoranakul competing in the AM Class. Completing the local line up, Thai driver Bobby Suttiluch of True Visions makes his debut in Super Trofeo Asia this weekend. Indeed, competition in the AM Class is sure to be fierce, with the Thai brothers currently tied for second position in class with the experienced partnership of George Chou and Samson Chan of Top Speed Racing, whilst X-One Racing’s Andrew Haryanto arrives fresh from Sepang with two stunning class wins under his belt. The Chinese JRM pairing of Stephen Hong and Hao Bian also join the series for the first time this weekend.

The 2017 season marks the sixth consecutive year running of the Super Trofeo Asia series, the first ever Lamborghini Super Trofeo Middle East series, as well as the ninth and fifth consecutive years of the European and North American Super Trofeo series, respectively. The Buriram race weekend is the second of six Super Trofeo Asia series race fixtures this season, with the first held in Sepang last month and rounds three four and five taking place at some of the region’s most thrilling race tracks. The sixth round as well as the World Final will take place at the legendary Enzo & Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola, Italy.

The Chang International Circuit, known locally as the ‘Destination of Speed’, is one of Asia’s newest tracks and well loved by spectators for its layout, with all of the 12 corners visible from the spectator stands. Measuring in at just over 4.55km, the circuit was designed by the world famous Hermann Tilke and has already played host to the Japanese Super GT, World Touring Car Championship, World Superbike Championship and the Asian Le Mans Series to name but a few.

This year’s Super Trofeo Thai stop in Buriram, will take place alongside the second round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia, where Lamborghini will also be competing with a number of Huracán GT3.

This year the Asia series has attracted additional interest from competitors in other Super Trofeo series, with entries from the winner of the Middle East series’ Lamborghini Cup class winner Gabriele Murroni, as well as Young Drivers Program graduate and Middle East Pro/Am class winner Rik Breukers and his teammate Nigel Farmer, who already made a splash at Sepang with an excellent performance for GDL Racing, taking an overall race win as well as two class wins, and putting pressure on the current Pro Class leaders, local favorite Afiq Yazid and Cozzolino Kei of Clazzio Racing.  Although based in the Asia region, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia welcomes a truly international field with a number of front running European teams taking part, including Leipert Motorsport, FFF Racing Team and Team Lazarus. With the competition now heating up, all teams will be hoping to notch up points before the following round in Suzuka.

Racing in the championship is divided into separate podiums, recognizing the breadth of talent in the Super Trofeo field. After each race, there is a podium for the top three finishers in the Overall, Pro-AM, AM classes, as well as the Lamborghini Cup for new drivers and rookies. The championship provides exciting action for Professional and Gentleman drivers alike.

The 2017 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo remains unchanged from last year, adopting the same V10 direct injection engine mounted on the Huracán road car, managed by a Motec control unit that delivers a maximum output of 620 horsepower, and with a dry weight of just 1270kg, the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo possesses an astonishing weight/power ratio of 2.05 Kg/hp, translating to blistering on-track performance.

There will be two 50-minute sprint races at Buriram International Circuit, with Race 1 starting at 14:00 pm (TST) Saturday, May 20, with Race 2 on Sunday, May 21 at 11:20 am. Qualifying begins at 9:50 am on Saturday May 20.

The 2017 Asia series features 12 races spread over six race weekends, all at iconic circuits. The first five events showcase some of the best tracks in Asia. The series started this year in Sepang, with the upcoming race at Thailand’s Buriram International Circuit this coming weekend, followed by Suzuka Circuit in Japan, Fuji International Speedway in Japan and Shanghai International Circuit in China. The sixth event and final two rounds of the season will be at the Enzo & Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola, situated in Italy’s Bologna region and home of Automobili Lamborghini. Here, the conclusion of the Super Trofeo Asia, Europe and North American series will converge in a world final and contest for a prized spot on the global podium.
