First−Ever Summer Reading List that Combines Reading and Play for Children under Five

Release Date: 18 Jun 2013
President-Elect of the Association for Library Service to Children on creative ways to build early literacy skills

This summer, children under the age of five will be able to enjoy the delight of a good beach read with the introduction of a summer reading list customized just for them. Put together by the Association for Library Service to Children and LEGO DUPLO this is the first summer reading list to bring together two things young children love most—playing and reading—to encourage early literacy skills.

Each book was hand-selected by ALSC's executive book committee for its age-appropriate content, engaging story and availability to loan the book from a local library. Custom-made play activities are paired with each book, offering children creative ways to build along with the story. The reading list consists of 10 books: five books for children 1-3 and five books for children 3-5.

Some of the books from the 2013 Read, Build, Play Summer Reading List include:
• Big Box for Ben by Deborah Bruss (Star Bright Books, 2011)
• Construction Crew by Lynn Meltzer (Henry Holt and Co, 2011)
• Dig In! by April Jones Prince (Abrams Appleseed, 2013)
• Doors in the Air by David Weale (Orca Book Publishers, 2012)
• Press Here by Herve Tullet (Chronicle Books. 2011)

ALSC's President-Elect, Starr Latronica talks about the latest early literacy findings and thoughts, why this new twist on a summer reading list will excite young children and practical tips on how to bring reading to life through play at home.

Available content includes soundbites from Starr Latronica.
