Is It Time For "The Talk?"

audio package, .mp3
ANCHOR LEAD: If your aging parent is struggling with making bill payments, maybe making a payment twice… or having troubles with basic math, it may be time to step in with some financial help. Are you ready to have "the talk." Brian Osuch has more. (:60) SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. Sometimes there are financial challenges associated with caring for an aging parent. And the National Endowment for Financial Education or NEFE's President, Ted Beck says their recent survey finds the majority of respondents are ready for "the talk." CUT: (Beck) On the positive side, 86% of the people we talked to told us that they trusted the family members and hoped they would step in to help them at the appropriate time. On the other hand, 7 out of 10 told us there were family dynamics that could potentially get in the way. SCRIPT: That's why "the talk" is necessary. Beck recommends explaining the process to an aging parent… and how a financial plan is tailor made for their own unique situation. CUT: (Beck) They should identify who in the family they want to take lead on this and helping them with their financial decision making going forward. SCRIPT: And don't forget to talk about assets family members may not know about. CUT: (Beck) Put together an inventory of your resources… especially if you've moved around a bit.
