Audio Package
ANCHOR LEAD: Since 2008 car thieves haven't been driving all that fast or furious. Brian Osuch has more. (:60) SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. For the past five years car thieves' lives have been made more difficult all thanks to technology which helps bring high-speed pursuits to a grinding halt. OnStar's George Baker. CUT: (Baker) High-speed chases are to blame for more than 300-deaths each year. OnStar's Stolen Vehicle Slowdown or SVS was created to help curb chases and reduce the number of injuries and property loss associated with these often dangerous rides. SCRIPT: Working together with law enforcement officers, OnStar has put a stop to nearly 250-pursuits. CUT: (Baker) The Stolen Vehicle Slowdown feature enables OnStar advisors to pinpoint an exact location using GPS technology and remotely signal the stolen vehicle to disable the gas pedal. That's when the car thief is caught off guard as the stolen vehicle slows to an idle speed… taking the control out of the bad guy's hands and into the hands of the authorities. SCRIPT: Since the beginning days of SVS, OnStar has been requested to assist in the recovery of more than 59,000-stolen vehicles. For more information go to OnStar.com. That's Newsbreak from OnStar.
