A Single Charger for All Electronic Devices
Electronics manufacturers will be now obliged to provide a common battery charger for mobile phones, smart phones, tablets, digital cameras, music players and similar devices. This legislation, adopted for the first time, will bring significant benefits for consumers and will reduce electronic waste.
The European parliament's negotiator Barbara Weiler stressed after the vote: "The current incompatibility of chargers for mobile phones, smart phones, tablets, digital cameras, music players is a nightmare and a real inconvenience for consumers. This new directive ends this nightmare and is also good news for the environment as it will result in a reduction of electronic waste. We want the industry, the European Commission and member states to take these steps in the interest of European consumers."
The directive also lays down harmonised rules for placing radio equipment on the market. The rules aim to keep pace with the growing number and variety of radio equipment devices and ensure that they do not interfere with each other.
