GAZA: MEPs launch an urgent call for an immediate ceasefire
Strasbourg. The Socialist & Democrat Group today supported a demonstration held in front of the European Parliament against the resurgence of violence in Gaza.

Led by the Israeli Yoav Shemer-Kunz, the action aimed at calling the EU to ensure the immediate stop of all military operations and the launching of bombs and rockets against civilians.

S&D Members, deeply concerned about the downward spiral of the Gaza crisis, reiterate their call for an immediate end to hostilities in a resolution to be voted tomorrow in Strasbourg.

Richard Howitt, Member of the Foreign Affairs EP Committee said:

"On behalf of the S&D Group, it's our duty to be there, to show solidarity with them and to join their cause, and for them to join ours, to stop this unnecessary violence and for an immediate ceasfire to protect the people of Gaza and of Israel."

"As the S&D group, we are proud to be supporting a resolution because it calls for an immediate ceasefire and if that call is heard, it will save lives. Of course, we would want to go further. We want to do everything and anything possible to secure Middle East peace, but I'm confident that we have secured enough support across the house, across party to get a big majority for this resolution. "

MEP Ana Gomes added:

"We're here to demand a stop in this new round of violence and to demand that a long term solution will be found for the conflict btw Israel and Palestine."

"We believe that only by having a safe and viable Palestinian State next to it, will Israel be able to insure some survival."

The further escalation of this crisis can only bring more suffering to both Israelis and Palestinians.
