LGBTI Rights: The EU Should Lead by Example and not just Talk the Talk

"The EU must lead by example on LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) people's rights, not just talk the talk", said S&D members today in Strasbourg, strongly backing a European Parliament report calling for the adoption of an EU Roadmap against homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Following the adoption of the report, S&D Vice-President Sylvie Guillaume said:

"EU leaders must step up their efforts to eliminate discrimination and violence against LGBTI people in the EU.

"Most LGBTI people in the EU are still regularly discriminated against in the labour market, in schools, in hospitals, when renting a house or going on holiday. They are often victims of physical attacks for no reason other than their gender identity or sexual orientation.

"Protecting LGBTI people does not require the creation of a new set of specific rights. In the majority of cases, it simply requires the enforcement of existing laws against discrimination and violence throughout the EU and ensuring the freedom of movement of LGBTI people.

"That should, primarily, be the goal of an EU roadmap".

Michael Cashman, S&D rapporteur on LGBTI rights, added:

"I'm extremely proud that the Parliament chose to support this crucial report.

"It shows that the European Commission can no longer procrastinate, and must now come forward with a solid plan to tackle homophobia and transphobia in the EU.

"The opposition from conservative activists was fierce and based on lies and misrepresentation. This report is balanced, sensible, and fair. We won the vote with a clear majority, and it's now this parliament's firm position, which we'll advance over the next few years."
