Paris Climate Conference: Energy efficiency must be the core of the deal
Yesterday evening in Brussels, The European Parliament, Commission and Council discussed the steps to be taken on the way to the next UN climate conference (COP 21) in Paris in December 2015. Since the previous conference, last December in Lima, many questions were left opened - climate mitigation, adaptation and finance.
S&D MEPs insist on the need for a renewable energy transition as a remedy to tackle climate change and to face employement crisis in Europe.
S&D negociator, MEP Jo Leinen said:
"S&Ds want to reach a global deal on climate protection in Paris. Therefore, we need a climate diplomacy all over the year 2015. That must be the core of the deal : Going out of fossil fuels to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency ».
S&D vice-president Kathleen Van Brempt said:
"People are afraid of an energy transition based on renewable energy because they think it will cost them more to them and their children, but that's not true. If we do not act, it will only cost more in the future. It will add up. And on top of that, the good news is, it will create thousands of jobs".
MEPs' ambition for the Paris conference is to reach a global climate agreement to keep the world on track for a sub-2°C climate warming scenario. The event, which will be held by 30 November to 11 December 2015, would lead to a new global agreement that would replace the Kyoto Protocol.
