MEP Kathleen Van Brempt today visited a new residential area in Roeselare in the west of Belgium, where houses are part of a 'heating district' - connected together.” 6. KATHLEEN VAN BREMPT (S&D VICE-PRESIDENT) SAYING (ENGLISH): “The very special issue is that there is no gas connection or any other fossil fuels but the heating and the hot water are all coming from the district heating so it's not compatible with the Energy Union, this is the very back bone of the Energy Union” FLANDERN, BELGIUM (MAY 20, 2013) (EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AUDIOVISUAL - ACCESS ALL) 7. KOEN VAN OVERBERGHE (TECHNICAL DIRECTOR AND ENVIRONMENT COORDINATOR – MIROM) SAYING (ENGLISH): “A district heating system is actually really simple: it's just distributing energy as hot water” 16. CUTAWAYS: VARIOUS OF KATHLEEN VAN BREMPT AND KOEN VAN OVERBERGHE VISITING THE INCINERATOR SITE 17. VOICE OVER SAYING (ENGLISH): “Let's see how it works. » BRUSSELS BELGIUM (MARCH 30, 2015) (SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT - ACCESS ALL) 18. ANIMATED GRAPHIC SHOWING HOW THE INCINERATOR SITE IN ROESELARE WORKS 19. VOICE-OVER SAYING (ENGLISH): “ This is an overview of the incinerator site in Roeselare. Every day, 185,000kg of waste - mainly household waste - is transferred from the bunker to the ovens where it is burnt at a high temperature without the addition of any polluting fuels. The stroke escaping from the ovens is cooled down in order to recuperate heat. The heat is then turned into superheated water and flows at 110C° through underground pipes. These pipes carry the water – as a source of heat – to schools, a hospital, a swimming pool, greenhouses and private habitations. But is it really possible to burn waste without pollution or wastage? The answer is yes. During the incineration process, harmful substances such as chlorine, bleach, heavy metals and CO present in the smoke are neutralised through four filtering steps. Furthermore, the excess of hot water which is not used for heating remotely is turned into electricity thanks to a thermodynamic system...enough to provide the electricity required to run the incinerator site, a 20 hectares greenhouse for vegetable plants and a biomass drying unit. In the end, this system saves 4 million litres of oil every year! ” ROESELARE, BELGIUM (FEBRUARY 13, 2015) (SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT - ACCESS ALL) 20. KOEN VAN OVERBERGHE (TECHNICAL DIRECTOR AND ENVIRONMENT COORDINATOR – MIROM) SAYING (ENGLISH): “The waste in this plant comes from households. We burn the waste from approximately 400,000 inhabitants. So it's really the bags you put on the street that get converted to heat for heating-up their own houses” 21. CUTAWAYS: VARIOUS OF KATHLEEN VAN BREMPT AND KOEN VAN OVERBERGHE VISITING THE INCINERATOR SITE AND LOOKING AT THE WASTE BEING BURNED 22. CUTAWAYS: VARIOUS OF A TRUCK BRINGING WASTE ON THE INCINERATOR SITE TO BE RECYCLED 23. CUTAWAYS: VARIOUS OF KOEN VAN OVERBERGHE SHOWING OTHER PARTS OF THE INCINERATOR SITE 24. VOICE-OVER SAYING (ENGLISH): 25. “The system also guarantees consumers energy bills that are 5% cheaper than if they used gas installations: an important point that shows how it can combine the comfort of a sustainable home with affordability.” 26. CUTAWAYS: MICHELE HOSTEKINT TALKING TO A JOURNALIST INSIDE THE FOSSIL FUEL FREE HOUSE 27. MICHELE HOSTEKINT (ALDERMAN FOR ENERGY AND CLIMATE IN ROESELARE) SAYING (ENGLISH): “We are here in one of the houses that is being heated with the district heating. So it's one of the examples of how the technology of the district heating can actually be used in private houses. We're going to connect a thousand houses in a couple of years, we're going to expand the central heating system all over the city so we can very easily connect other houses. It's quite a huge project in Roeselare" 28. CUTAWAYS: MICHELE HOSTEKINT TALKING TO A JOURNALIST INSIDE THE FOSSIL FUEL FREE HOUSE AND THEN OUTSIDE WITH KATHLEEN VAN BREMPT 29. VOICE OVER SAYING (ENGLISH): “An expansion which reflects the great potential of this project and offers lots of inspiration for European energy challenges. » 30. KATHLEEN VAN BREMPT (S&D VICE-PRESIDENT) SAYING (ENGLISH): “Let's be proud of our energy. Energy should not be something that is dirty and polluting so let's be proud and let's make sure that everybody is connected to it" 31. CUTAWAY : GENERAL SHOT OF THE INCINERATOR SITE OF ROESELARE
