CUTAWAY: LINDA MCAVAN (S&D MEP, UK) AT THE PUBLIC HEARING BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (FEBRUARY 26, 2013) (SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT - ACCESS ALL) 4. LINDA MCAVAN (S&D MEP, UK) SAYING (ENGLISH): "We saw at the meeting yesterday new kinds of advertising by the industry in the form of packages: packages that are pink, packages that are in form of lipstick or perfume shaped. And these packages are designed to attract new smokers, that is what all the scientific evidence seems to point to. And the European Commission is saying: 'hang on a minute, we don't want a new generation of smokers recruited so we must take action now to make sure that cigarettes on the market look like cigarettes, taste like cigarettes and are sold like cigarettes, they are not sweets, not toys and they shouldn't look like them." 5. CUTAWAY: LINDA MCAVAN (S&D MEP, UK) AT THE PUBLIC HEARING 6. LINDA MCAVAN (S&D MEP, UK) SAYING (ENGLISH): "The first thing is the packaging. The European Commission is proposing that at least 75% of the package should be covered in pictorial warnings, some countries already do this in the European Union, some do not. Their proposal is that it should be mandatory; at least 75% should be covered in warnings. They are also proposing a ban on these lipstick/perfume packages that people believe are being targeted at young women in particular, they should go. 7. LINDA MCAVAN LISTENING TO THE PUBLIC HEARING 8. LINDA MCAVAN (S&D MEP, UK) SAYING (ENGLISH): "It is always about targeting young people. We don't want to see a new generation of smokers recruited. JEAN KING (DIRECTOR OF TOBACCO CONTROL, CANCER RESEARCH UK) SAYING (ENGLISH SPEECH): "We haven't heard so much about how the tobacco industry has sorted to block, amend or delay key legislation in the EU aimed at protecting the health of the citizens. And there is a very large body of evidence which shows that the tobacco industry has distorted science. It has tried to supress research or produced biased research. It has paid scientists to present biased research." 11. CUTAWAY: JEAN KING GIVING HER CARD TO A COLLEAGUE 12.
