Victory and lead for Stian Paulsen at the Nürburgring

Release Date: 22 Sep 2015
Nürburg 19/09/2015 – Stian Paulsen (Stian Paulsen Racing) was totally in control in the first race of the weekend in Germany, at the fifth round of the SEAT León Eurocup. The Norwegian started from pole position, dealing with the Nürburgring rain to take his second victory of the season, his fifth in the international series, putting him into the lead of the overall standings. After Paulsen, Mauricio Hernandez (Target Competition) and Mikel Azcona (PCR Sport), second and third respectively, completed the podium. The were accompanied by Andrina Gugger (Target Competition), the top finisher in the Ladies Trophy category.

Domination from start to finish, that was the story of Paulsen's day. The Norwegian, showing unwavering authority from pole, was able to deal with the rain at the Nurburgring to cruise to victory at the German track. After making a good start and defending his lead, Paulsen moved away from his pursuers lap after lap. With a steady pace, the Norwegian driver managed to cross the finish line more than seven seconds ahead of second placed Hernandez.

It was a good performance for the Costa Rican, who after getting his highest ranking position of the season on Friday, today took his first podium finish in the international series. Hernandez starred in a nice battle in the early stages of the race with Shane Anthony Williams (Wolf-Power Racing), who in the end had to settle for fourth.

In the closing laps, on an almost dry track, the South African battled with Spanish pair Azcona and Jordi Oriola (Target Competition). The three staged a spectacular fight. In the end, Williams missed a podium spot on the last lap, when a determined Azcona overtook him in the final stages to clinch the third place on the podium, his third rostrum finish this season.

With today's victory, Paulsen is now the new leader of the SEAT Leon Eurocup, five points ahead of Pol Rosell (Baporo Motorsport), who has lost the lead after finishing seventh today. Lucile Cypriano (JSB Competition), now joint 12th overall, continues as leader of the Ladies Trophy standings.

Tomorrow, the second race of the weekend and the tenth of the season will take place at the German track of Nurburgring. The action will begin at 12.05pm and, as always, will be broadcast through the official SEAT channel on Youtube. And now also through the new SEAT León Eurocup mobile app, which is free to download.

Stian Paulsen, Stian Paulsen Racing, 1st place in race 9 of the SEAT Leon Eurocup 2015, 1st place in the general standings: "I am very happy. From the beginning I realized that if I knew keep the car going well I had a good chance to win the race. I was very comfortable despite the weather and on the first lap had already opened a gap of more than one second on the rest, so I knew immediately that if I continued with the same pace, conversing the tyres, it would all come together well. It went smoothly and at no point did I have to push too hard. I couldn't ask for more. If I continue with the same pace tomorrow I'm sure I'll have a good race."

Mauricio Hernandez, Target Competition, 2nd place in Race 9 of the SEAT León Eurocup 2015, 10th place in the general standings: "It's been a very productive weekend for us so far. Largely thanks to the great work we did on the first day of practice as this put us on track to finishing second today, in a really difficult race. We knew we had a good pace, so we applied a little patience at the beginning of race and gradually opened up a gap on the other riders. Nürburgring is quite a complicated circuit and our conservative strategy, pushing in the dry and being cautious in the wet, has paid off."

Mikel Azcona, PCR Sport, 3rd place in race 9 of the SEAT León Eurocup 2015, 3rd place in the general standings: "I am very happy with the work we have done. It was a very difficult race because on the grid it started raining and it changed our plans. However, we decided to go on "slicks" and little by little we gained positions. My pace was good and I knew that, so it was just a matter of being consistent and not making any mistakes."

Andrina Gugger, Target Competition, 9th place in race 9 of the SEAT León Eurocup, 2nd in the Ladies Trophy category: "I am very happy because yesterday I was not sure how a wet race would go and that worried me a little. Today, in some pretty tough conditions, I found the way to concentrate and my rhythm was not affected by the rain. I hope that tomorrow we can continue in the same vein and complete a productive weekend."
