If You Have Heartburn, You May Be At Risk To Develop The Fastest Growing Cancer In The U.S.
ANCHOR LEAD: Did you know there is a link between heartburn and esophageal cancer, the fastest growing cancer in the U.S.? Brian Osuch has more on one treatment, which can help reduce its progression. (:60)

SCRIPT: Health Care Now, I'm Brian Osuch. Esophageal cancer is currently outpacing both breast and prostate cancers and melanoma, but the exact cause of this deadly form of cancer is not known. However, experts do know that there is a clear link to heartburn, which, over time, can lead to a precancerous condition called Barrett's esophagus. Dr. Kenneth Chang, University of California, Irvine:

CUT: (Dr. Chang) As we know, millions of Americans suffer from acid reflux, which can develop into Barrett's esophagus. Left untreated, Barrett's esophagus can increase one's risk of developing cancer 30 to 40 fold. However, we have a highly effective treatment to help reduce the risk of its progression to esophageal cancer, called Barrx radiofrequency ablation, or RFA.

SCRIPT: Barrx RFA can remove the precancerous cells, greatly reducing one's risk for the condition to progress to cancer.

CUT: (Dr. Chang) Barrett's Esophagus cells may become more abnormal over time and by treating this higher risk, precancerous stage with Barrx RFA, progression to esophageal cancer can be reduced by over 80%.

SCRIPT: If you or a loved one suffers from reflux, find a physician near you offering the Barrx procedure, by visiting LearnAboutBarrets.com. That's Health Care Now from Medtronic.
