ANCHOR LEAD: We're all becoming familiar with emojis, those little pictures we use on our smart devices to express our feelings. Now, research shows labeling food with similar images has an effect on what our children choose to eat during their meals. Brian Osuch has more. (:60)
SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Brian Osuch. Childhood obesity has been labeled an epidemic in the U.S. and up until now, very little has been done to communicate health to children on a national scale. But, Dr. Greg Privitera, University Research Chair, School of Advanced Studies at University of Phoenix is changing that with health information children can understand to make better food choices.
CUT: (Dr. Privitera) My research indicated ecological factors are most predictive of obesity among children, and that a new image-based labeling strategy I developed, emolabeling, may effectively address these factors. It's pretty simple, emotional correlates of health like "healthy equals happy" and "unhealthy equals sad" leads to healthy food choices.
SCRIPT: Dr. Privitera and his colleagues put the emolabels to the test with children aged three to eleven.
(Dr. Privitera) It works… Emolabeling effectively influenced food choices more so than labeling for taste, social norms and branding. We found a significant proportion of children in the pre-literacy and the early literacy grades used emoticons to specifically make healthy food choices.
