Groupama in Prime Position for Leg Victory Halfway through Leg 4 of Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12

French-entry Groupama sailing team are leading the fleet to the trade winds, putting them in a strong position to win Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 as the boats approach the leg's midway point from China into Auckland, New Zealand.

The team led by French sailing hero Franck Cammas have made steady gains since the fleet turned south across the Pacific after a grueling sail in the South and East China Seas coming out of Sanya, China last week.

The race had to be suspended at the start for 12 hours in Sanya due to weather for the first time in the 39-year history of the race.

Latest position reports place Groupama about 50 nautical miles ahead of their nearest competitors, second place CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand. The French team have frequently averaged speeds over 20 knots in the past day of sailing.

Team Telefónica lie third, about 80 nm behind. Team Sanya are fourth, PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG, fifth with the most easterly position, and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing remain in sixth position, just over 100 nautical miles behind Groupama.
