A long-distance truck has to be prepared for all the challenges that lie ahead. It needs to stay in top performing shape, no matter if it crosses the mountains', races over heavy terrain or suffers through both the heat and the cold. That's why Volvo Trucks has put their new Volvo FH through a number of tough quality tests.
Kenneth Abrahamsson, Project Manager for verification, validation and features for the new Volvo FH:
The key factors when we work with quality in a big project like this is to understand the usage of the truck. To understand the customers needs, the different environments, the different applications that it will work within.
Therefore the extensive quality tests have been performed all over the world. The test method it self, however, is quite easy: It's about testing, measuring and improving. And then doing the same thing all over again. And again, until the quality level for the new truck met Volvo trucks highly set standards.
We have done a huge number of tests within this project. In the beginning you start up with component test, rigg test, accelerated durability test. We put cabs in hot chambers, cold chambers, sun simulatiors in order to verify durability. Later on we do a lot of accelerated test on the proving ground, with durability and reliability, different features, handling, ride comfort, etc.
One of Volvo Trucks proving grounds is placed in the most northern parts of Sweden.
But to ensure that the new trucks really hold the high quality that the customers expect, Volvo Trucks has also conducted a large number of field tests with real customer operations. One of them is Coots in Australia.
Phil Ryan, fied test driver:
In the end, this will benefit all customers, regardless of which type of operation they have.
Within the project we have had the possibility to do all the test we want to do. We have used the whole test pallet we have. This has created a fantastic truck, with good features, with extremely high quality and in the end it will give a very good uptime for the customer.
