‘PR Alert: Brands Have Just One More Week to Make Their Press Sites Mobile Friendly—or Lose Out in Google Rankings’
Google Will Expand Mobile Friendliness as a Ranking Signal on April 21
As brands become publishers and the discipline of content marketing becomes entrenched in companies’ marketing mix, traffic to online press sites is growing, especially from mobile devices. According to Google’s Webmaster Central Blog, companies now have just one week left to update their press sites to optimize for mobile—otherwise they will appear lower in search rankings. The search company says “users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly web pages or apps.”
“Google is updating its algorithms so that a site’s mobile-friendliness will affect searches from mobile devices. This is happening globally and will significantly impact search results,” said Krish Menon, CTO of TheNewsMarket, in a news release. “The changes go into effect on April 21st.”
TheNewsMarket logs traffic from millions of journalist interactions every year. The firm revealed that mobile traffic to its YourNewsMarket platform, which uses Responsive Web Design for mobile optimization, jumped to 41% in Q1 2015, up from 26% in the same period in 2014.
“Too many brands are missing out by journalists getting turned off by press sites which frankly don’t work on mobiles,” said Matt Thomson, MD of TheNewsMarket, in the release. “With Google’s upcoming changes, their press sites might not even appear in Google rankings. A quick check on Google’s test site will tell you if you need to take action.”
