Release Date: 18 Jan 2019   |   Washington, DC
Gita Gopinath meeting with predecessor Maury Obstfeld
The IMF has a new chief economist, and for the first time in the organization’s history that role is held by a woman.
Harvard Professor Gita Gopinath has assumed the roles of Economic Counselor and Head of the Research Department at the Fund.
“Gita is one of the world’s outstanding economists, with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership, and extensive international experience”, said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.
“All this makes her exceptionally well-placed to lead our research department at this important juncture.”
The IMF, OECD and the World Bank all now have women in top economic positions.
Gopinath has taken leave as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University. Her research there focused on International Finance and Macroeconomics.
She takes over from her predecessor, Maury Obstfeld, who returns to teaching in California at UC, Berkely.
