CDC Launches New Graphic Antismoking Ad Campaign

Release Date: 23 Mar 2012
The CDC launched a hard-hitting ad campaign that depicts the harsh reality of illness and damage real people suffer as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. More than a million dollars an hour is spent to market cigarette products in this country. This campaign tells the other side of the story – the true consequences of tobacco addiction from real people facing the challenges of smoking-related diseases each and every day.

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S. More than 8 million Americans are living with a smoking-related disease and every day thousands of young Americans become daily smokers. Seventy percent of Americans say they want to quit and this new campaign will provide the information and resources to help them do so.

Available for interviews, Dr. Tim McAfee, Director, Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can talk about the historical national tobacco control campaign. A Former Smoker featured in the campaign, Brandon Carmichael, will also be available for interviews. Thursday morning is the first time the ads will be available. Visitors can find multiple resources including quit help and free coaching at 1-800-QUIT-NOW and www.smokefree.gov
