Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer emerged victorious in last week's European Allround Speed Skating Championships in Minsk, taking home his eighth allround champion title and setting a new event record. The Olympic athlete competed against skaters from 17 other European countries in the 500m, 5000m, 1500m and 10,000m, placing first in both the men's 5000m and 10,000m events with times of 6:19.17 and 13:11.98, respectively.

The 29-year-old previously took home gold medals in the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2015 championship events. In 2010, Kramer famously became the first speed skater in history to win four consecutive allround European championships. About the European Speed Skating Championships

The International Skating Union (ISU) has organized and sponsored the European Speed Skating Championships since 1893. Initially only open to men, the ISU organized its first women's championship in 1970. Since 1990, the European Speed Skating Championships has been held as a dual event, with both men and women's races taking place at the same time and venue. This annual championship consists of a series of long track speed skating events that are used to determine the best allround speed skater in Europe. Winners are awarded a laurel wreath.

The Netherlands currently holds the highest number of combined all-time medals at this championship, with a total of 128 (of which 42 are gold). Norway holds the second highest number of all-time medals with 109, followed by Germany at 52.

The 2017 European Speed Skating Championship event will be held in Zakopane, Poland.
