To celebrate the hard-working tourism employees and the visitors who are integral to its success, Las Vegas will join U.S. Travel Association, and destinations across the country, in recognizing National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), May 6-12.
“We are thrilled to join the celebrations around the country,” said Rossi Ralenkotter, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). “Tourism is the lifeblood of Southern Nevada’s economy, employing nearly half of all residents. Las Vegas is the only destination in the world that was built to host visitors and we take a lot of pride in the experiences we provide all of them. National Travel and Tourism Week is an exceptional celebration because it not only recognizes the impact of the industry in communities around the country, but also the dedicated individuals who make it happen.”
The LVCVA is hosting a series of events and activations in conjunction with NTTW. Here are highlights of the week’s activities.
Transit Stop Surprises (May 7-8)
The LVCVA is partnering with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), City of Las Vegas’ Downtown Loop and AAA Self-Driving Shuttle to host a series of transit stop surprises. Locals and visitors riding transit will be greeted by showgirls as they disembark and rewarded with “thank you” giveaways from a variety of Las Vegas attractions and shows. Transit stops included: TC Bonneville Transit Cente, Downtown Loop stop at Mob Museum, AAA Self-Driving Shuttle stop at Container Park, AAA Self-Driving Shuttle stop at Fremont Street Experience, and RTC stop at Fremont Street Experience.
Tourism Rally (Tuesday, May 8)
On Tuesday, May 8, the LVCVA hosted its annual rally in celebration of tourism with a live concert at Fremont Street Experience’s Third Street Stage. The rally featured performances by local favorite Zowie Bowie and celebrity impersonators. Additionally, Adam London, Defending the Caveman, FANTASY at Luxor Hotel and Casino and Thunder from Down Under will interact with and entertain the crowd. Throughout the two-hour celebration, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman Oscar Goodman and showgirls will handed out giveaways including a free helicopter ride above the Las Vegas Strip with Sundance Helicopters, staycation packages from a variety of resorts, tickets to some of the destination’s best shows, attraction passes and much more. “Go Red” for Tourism (Tuesday, May 8)
Per the U.S. Travel Association, the color red represents unity among travel and tourism workers and supporters coast-to-coast. In support of NTTW, community members are encouraged to wear red during Travel Rally Day on Tuesday, May 8. Marquees and billboards throughout Las Vegas will boast NTTW messaging. Additionally, businesses and landmarks throughout the community are also encouraged to turn signs, lights and decorations red to mark the occasion. Partners committed to “going red” include: FANTASY at Luxor Hotel and Casino, Fremont Street Experience, High Roller, Las Vegas City Hall, Le Rêve – The Dream at Wynn Las Vegas, McCarran International Airport, Mob Museum, NEON Museum and Thunder from Down Under.
The LVCVA is excited to celebrate the 11th anniversary of its Hospitality Heroes program. Launched in 2008, Hospitality Heroes recognizes those in the tourism industry who have gone above and beyond to provide the best customer service to our more than 42 million annual visitors. Through the past 11 years, the program has recognized 475 people employed in the travel and tourism industry in Southern Nevada. Throughout the month of May, the LVCVA will continue this tradition and recognize more than 50 frontline employees at hotels and attractions by surprising them on the job with a Hospitality Hero award. Blood Drive Challenge for Tourism Kick-Off (Friday, May 11)
The Las Vegas Host Committee will partner with United Blood Services and kick off the third annual Blood Drive Challenge for Tourism, themed “Tourism is the lifeblood of Southern Nevada’s economy.” This initiative invites Las Vegas Host Committee Ambassadors and industry partners to show the strength of Las Vegas’ tourism industry by donating blood and saving lives.
Helldorado Days Parade (Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m.)
The LVCVA will end National Travel and Tourism Week by participating in the Helldorado Days parade. Employees and Host Committee Ambassadors will be invited to walk with the LVCVA float, which will be themed “Las Vegas: Then & Now,” and feature historic photos from the archives of the Las Vegas News Bureau.
