British gymnasts James Hall, Amy Tinkler and Dominick Cunningham are looking forward to competing on home soil again at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships this August. From experience, the trio knows how uplifting the home crowd can be.
“When you come out and your name’s announced and you hear the extra roar of the crowd it makes you stand a little taller and fight a little harder, so yeah, it’s exciting times,” says Hall. “The Europeans were my first major championships as a senior last year and hopefully my second will be just as successful. In front of a home crowd it will be absolutely incredible.”
Tinkler concurs: “I remember back in Glasgow at the 2015 World Championships the crowd there was absolutely incredible. It definitely gives us that boost. Hopefully they will come in the same and we can push for that European medal.”
The European Championships take place every four years, supported by Europe’s free-to-air broadcasters. The event aggregates the existing senior continental championships of Athletics (European Athletics), Aquatics (LEN), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (UEG), Rowing (FISA), Triathlon (ETU), with a new Golf Team Championships (ET & LET) – all unified under a common brand. Athletics will take place in Berlin from 7-12 August, while athletes from the other sports will compete in Glasgow.
For Cunningham, he sees the event as a platform where he can give back to the fans by putting in the best performance possible. “To make the European Championships in Glasgow, another home competition, it’s getting my name on the map [and a chance to] show what I do day in and day out at a competition,” he says. “It’s nice to give back to the crowds.”
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) already has agreements with over 40 broadcasters worldwide to cover the event. There will be up to 300 hours of programming across television, radio and online, free to air in all the main markets, with an anticipated 2,700 hours of television coverage across the Championships.
The vision for the event is to create a must-watch, must-attend experience that elevates the Champions of Europe during an 11-day celebration of sport and packed 10-day broadcast schedule backed by free-to-air television.
