- Following its successful use at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, adidas rolls out its CLIMACOOL SYSTEM to tennis to help athletes stay cool in the heat on the hard courts of New York.
- The system is proven to help reduce body temperature, manage heat, and boost endurance for elite athletes competing in demanding conditions.
- The technology - originally developed to support motorsport drivers - will be available to adidas athletes in the main draw at New York’s premier tennis tournament.
Today, adidas rolls out its CLIMACOOL SYSTEM for the first time in tennis, to help its athletes better manage heat by actively cooling the body before and during competition, supporting endurance, focus and performance in the anticipated hot conditions of New York, during America’s major tennis tournament.
Building on years of innovation, the system was originally developed by adidas to help the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team drivers manage extreme cockpit temperatures, before being deployed across all adidas partner federation teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.
Its expansion into tennis follows the introduction of CLIMACOOL+, adidas’ latest fabric innovation, launched earlier this summer as a new generation of performance apparel for the 2026 grass court season. Together, these innovations reflect adidas’ commitment to creating performance apparel solutions that help athletes stay cool, comfortable, and focused when competing even in the most demanding conditions.
THE TECHNOLOGY
adidas tennis athletes will be provided with a cooling vest and neck pieces for use during changeovers, set breaks and practice, to help reduce body temperature, manage heat, and boost endurance.
Designed as a fast and practical solution to lower body temperature, the cooling vest, worn over the player’s existing apparel, contains a specialized gel that is frozen before use in custom-built, portable freezer units. When worn, the gel slowly thaws, transferring cooling properties to the upper body, torso, abdomen and back to efficiently reduce body and skin temperature.
TENNIS-SPECIFIC IMPACT
The technology has been rigorously tested and developed taking sport specific needs into consideration to support tennis athletes throughout the demands of a tournament – where intense heat can have a profound effect on performance. Based on in-depth research into its elite tennis athletes, both on court and in the adidas Innovation Lab CLIMA Chamber, tennis-specific developments have been incorporated, including a front-center zip to allow quick application and removal of the technology, neck collar integration, and side adjustability to maximize contact and cooling during short breaks.
The vests will be complemented by neck pieces, which provide an enhanced cooling effect compared to the ice towels often used by tennis athletes during changeovers. Testing in the adidas Innovation Lab found that a significant cooling effect can be achieved after three minutes of using a vest and neck piece, and when used for 10-15 minutes the impact can last for up to an hour – helping with cooling following an intense practice or match.
The CLIMACOOL SYSTEM also serves to support athletes during intense practice sessions, to help maintain endurance and ensure optimum fitness in the lead-up to competition, and between matches.
Margherita Raccuglia, Director of Athlete Performance Innovation adidas, said: “Having introduced CLIMACOOL+ in London earlier this year, our goal was to carry this tech through to New York, but to also upgrade the cooling solutions available to tennis players to our CLIMACOOL System, following the response from footballers at FIFA World Cup 2026™. So, by testing and discussing with our tennis athletes, we have provided a practical solution to managing heat in a sport where individual matches can last up to five and a half hours in intense temperatures. We’re excited to see the impact it can have on their performance.”
THE ATHLETES
The CLIMACOOL SYSTEM was introduced to tennis players to solve a specific challenge from the athletes – to feel cooler and more comfortable, when practicing and competing in the most demanding climates and conditions amidst lengthy matches and intense schedules. Following direct requests for the CLIMACOOL SYSTEM, familiarization sessions were conducted with key athletes including Iva Jovic, Learner Tien and Alexander Zverev, who have the option of utilizing the technology on the biggest stage in New York.
The CLIMACOOL SYSTEM will be provided to adidas athletes in the main draw at New York’s premier tennis tournament this September, including Jessica Pegula, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Iva Jovic, Alexander Zverev, Karolina Muchova and more.
