Angel Daleman of the Netherlands and Germany’s Finn Sonnekalb both strike gold again in the speed skating

23 January 2024 - Angel Daleman (NED) and Finn Sonnekalb (GER) both won gold for the second day running at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024.

Daleman, 16, and Sonnekalb, also 16, followed up their victories in the 500m by topping the podium in the 1500m.

Unlike in the 500m, Daleman was in the penultimate pairing in the 1500m, and so had to wait to see if her time of 2:02.90 would be beaten by the final pair to go.

It proved enough as Liu Yunqi (CHN) took silver and Hanna Mazur (POL) finished inbronze.

In the men’s event, Sonnekalb proved a class of his own: his time of 1:50.53 saw him win gold by the huge margin of 2.31 secs. Pan Baoshuo (CHN) took silver, with Kubo Sota (JPN) finishing third.

Both Daleman and Sonnekalb will go for a third goal in the mass start events that take place in the Gangneung Oval on Friday (26 January).

Gangwon 2024 runs until 1 February, with more than 1,800 athletes from 78 NOCs taking part. The Winter Youth Olympic Games is filmed for live television and digital streaming on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
