As part of the Nelson-Boswell Reading Series, La Sociedad para Las Artes will host a public reading by award-winning novelist Rafael Frumkin.
Frumkin will read from her new short story collection “Bugsy & Other Stories” which includes five genre-defying stories celebrating a wide variety of human experiences. Frumkin, a former creative writing professor who is now a full-time writer, will give her reading at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 in NMSU’s CMI Theater in Milton Hall, Room 171. A free reception will follow the reading where copies of “Bugsy & Other Stories” will be available for purchase.
Frumkin is the author of three books: “The Comedown,” “Confidence” and “Bugsy & Other Stories.” “The Comedown” has recently been acquired for television and “Confidence” was named a New York Times Editor’s Pick and one of the Washington Post’s 50 Best Books of 2023. “Bugsy & Other Stories” was longlisted for the 2024 Story Prize.
Frumkin is inspired by the intersection of American individualism, behavioral authoritarianism and magical thinking. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the New York Times, The Point, Granta, Guernica, The Believer and others. Currently, she’s working on a third novel about gender, deception and small-town cults. Frumkin also writes frequently for her Substack, “The Cosmic Cheeto.”
The Nelson-Boswell Reading Series invites visiting writers to NMSU to share their work with the community. La Sociedad para Las Artes is seeking to establish a permanent endowed fund through the NMSU Foundation whose earnings will support creative writing programs, including visiting writers and reading series as well as creative writing workshops for children in Las Cruces Public Schools.
Next in the series, Kelly Krumrie, a new NMSU creative writing assistant professor, who will read from her book “No Measure” on Oct. 3. Multi-genre writer Oscar Mansinas will read from his novella “Leaving Home” on Oct. 10.
