22 January 2024 - Maria Volz of Germany is the Women’s Skeleton champion of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Gangwon.
18-year-old rising star Volz needed to show her quality at the Alpensia Sliding Centre in Pyeongchang to take the gold medal ahead of her main challengers, both from Latvia.
Volz finished 0.34 seconds ahead of Latvian 16-year-old Darta Neimane (silver) with compatriot Laura Legere, also 16, taking bronze. It was Germany’s first skeleton gold in a Winter Olympic event since 2012.
The Men’s Skeleton medals will be decided in Gangwon on Tuesday (January 23).
Gangwon 2024 runs until 1 February, with more than 1,800 athletes from 78 NOCs taking part. The Winter Youth Olympic Games is filmed for live television and digital streaming on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
