IMF Greece Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington Tuesday (January 7) with a warm greeting and signaling the improvement in relations between his country and the Fund.

Mitsotakis thanked Georgieva for her support of Greece and acknowledged that the relationship between Greece and the IMF has been difficult.

During the meeting he announced that the IMF would be closing its dedicated office in Athens, and called it symbolic of the relationship heading to a normalized status and an improvement of Greek economic prospects.

“The relationship with the Fund has not always been easy, but I think we agree on some important issues, such as the need to reduce primary surpluses in 2021,” Mitsotakis said.

PM Mitsotakis departed the Fund to hold a series of meetings at the White House before concluding his visit to Washington.
