21 January 2024 - Italian Camilla Vanni won the first gold medal in alpine skiing at the IV Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 and showed what a threat she will be in the next Winter Olympics in her home venue in Milano-Cortina 2026.
German skier Benno Brandis, also 17 years-old, won the men’s Super G on the Apollo slope on the first day of action at the Jeongseon High1 ski resort.
17-year-old Vanni, who is based in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the town that will co-host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, crossed the line in 53.54 seconds, 0.07 faster than Eva Schachner of Austria. Shaienne Zehnder was the quickest of the three Swiss skiers to finish in bronze medal position.
Brandis took his gold by just one hundredth of a second ahead of Asaja Sturm, the second Austrian to win silver. Andrej Barnas from Slovakia came third. It’s the first time a German alpine skier has won gold at a Winter Youth Olympic Games event.
