WHAT: A Day With(out) Art is dedicated to bringing action and awareness to the AIDS crisis. New Mexico State University’s Art Museum (UAM) and Gender and Sexuality Studies program are partnering with Visual AIDS to present “Meet Us Where We Are,” a program of six videos that highlight the intersection of art and HIV. The screenings are free and open to the public.
Important Notice: This program centers harm reduction and will contain depictions of sexual activity and drug use.
WHO: Marisa Sage, Director of the UAM, and Dylan Blackston, Director of NMSU’s Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, will introduce the program with presentations on art and HIV. Representatives from Aggie Health and Alianza of New Mexico will provide resources on sexual health and harm reduction services that are available on the NMSU campus and in the broader community.
“Meet Us Where We’re At” features newly commissioned videos by Kenneth Idongesit Usoro from Nigeria, Hoàng Thái Anh from Vietnam, Gustavo Vinagre and Vinicius Couto from Brazil and Portugal, Camilo Tapia Flores from Chile and Brazil, Camila Flores-Fernández from Peru and Germany and José Luis Cortés from Puerto Rico.
WHEN: Tabling for health resources will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the presentations, video screenings and panel discussions will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1.
WHERE: New Mexico State University in the bleachers area in the University Art Museum. The UAM is located inside Devasthali Hall at 1308 E. University Ave.

Background: Harm reduction is an important aspect of the AIDS movement, including practices like needle exchange and safe injection sites. People who use drugs have been affected by HIV since the beginning of the epidemic, and this program brings their perspectives to the forefront as essential participants in the conversation.
