NMSU Art Museum to introduce three exhibitions September 19

WHAT: New Mexico State University’s Art Museum (UAM) will host three exhibitions this fall: “Necessary Futures”, “Greetings from Tijuana” and “Jennifer Ling Datchuk: RIPENING.” To celebrate their concurrent openings, the public is invited to a free reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at the University Art Museum.

WHO: “Necessary Futures” highlights three New Mexico-based artists; sheri crider, Haley Greenfeather English and Szu-Han Ho as part of a state-wide effort to amplify the voices of marginalized communities within the criminal justice reform movement. Each artist actively engages with community partners and brings attention to organizations working on the frontlines of social justice in the Southwest.

“Greetings from Tijuana” is a solo exhibition by Georgina Treviño, a multidisciplinary artist, jeweler and educator from Tijuana, Mexico. Her work creates a space for visitors to experience Tijuana through the nostalgia of personal and collective memories.

“Jennifer Ling Datchuk: RIPENING” explores the cost of women’s labor in material culture. Datchuk, a Chinese American woman, uses her personal history and layered identity to examine the systems that hold women back. Her work amplifies female voices and expands the dialogue around Asian American histories.

WHEN: The public is invited to the free opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. All three exhibitions will be on display from Sept. 19, 2025 to March 7, 2026.

WHERE: The University Art Museum at New Mexico State University, 1308 E. University Ave.

VISUALS: The artists highlighted in “Necessary Futures” share the use of color, irony, joy and hope to address the ongoing impacts of mass incarceration, capitalism and colonialism. The exhibition presents a variety of artistic approaches and is dedicated to social change, offering art as a space to reflect and a call to action.

“Greetings from Tijuana” is built as a reimagined curios shop and framed through the lens of the postcard. The exhibition features site-specific installations and new jewelry that highlight the experiences of the generation that came of age in Tijuana in the 1990’s and 2000’s.

“Jennifer Ling Datchuk: RIPENING” includes work from across media—from ceramics to hair to video. Her exhibition presents new and reimagined works created for the UAM that explore the birthing complex and bodily autonomy, emphasizing the often-overlooked nature of women’s labor.

Details on UAM exhibitions and programming are available at www.uam.nmsu.edu. The art museum is located in Devasthali Hall at New Mexico State University, 1308 E. University Ave. The art museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
