25 January 2024 - The People’s Republic of China took gold in a thrilling Speed Skating Mixed Relay Final on Day 6 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024.

The pair of Liu Yunqi and Pan Baoshuo beat Republic of Korea (Lim Leewon and Heo Seok) by 0.04 secs thanks to Pan Baoshuo’s lunge for the line, which saw him past Heo Seok in a photo finish.

Netherlands had held the lead going into the final change over. Double gold medallist Angel Daleman handed over Sem Spruit ahead of the field but he was soon caught and had to settle for bronze. Japan finished fourth.

Netherlands had qualified fastest for the final, but one of the other medal favourites, Germany, crashed out and did not make the final.

Gangwon 2024 runs until 1 February, with more than 1,800 athletes from 78 NOCs taking part. The Winter Youth Olympic Games is filmed for live television and digital streaming on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
