Astypalaia, 03/06/2021 - SEAT MÓ and its eScooter 125 arrived today to Astypalaia, a Greek island that is on course to become green and smart thanks to the intiative taken by Volkswagen Group and the Greek Government. This mediterranean island will transform to e-mobility, smart mobility solutions and green power generation to, in the long run, become a model island for climate-neutral mobility and a future lab for Europe.
The first electric vehicles were taken into service today in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess and Deputy Foreign Minister Kostas Fragogiannis, including the first fully electric police car in Greece, vehicles used at the airport and by the island’s municipality. Private customers can choose the electric scooter SEAT MÓ 125 or electric cars like the the VW e-up! Or the ID.3 and ID.4.
Lucas Casasnovas, managing director of SEAT MÓ, participated in the event at Astypalaia today and said that “it is a great milestone for SEAT MÓ being part of this Volkswagen Group’s exciting project. With these initiatives we are actively contributing to improve the environment, the mobility and the life quality of people in island. Our SEAT MÓ eScooter 125 and our new mobility solutions are currently arriving to the main european markets and Greece and Astypalaia could become a benchmark project on transformation to 100% sustainable mobility solutions, escalable & adaptable to other islands or big urban areas”.
In the coming years, the island wants to switch to smart sustainable mobility and completely modernizing its energy system. Mobility will be electric powered by locally produced green electricity, and new mobility services like scooter sharing, car sharing and ride sharing, will reduce by one third the needs of vehicles in the island and will replace the existing public bus service. The Volkswagen Group and the Greek government signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect last November and the Greek government is fully involved in this transformation and is additionally supporting the switch to e-mobility with high attractive subsidies.
