Tokyo 2020 breaks records on and off the field

08 Aug 2021 - It wasn’t just the athletes who were breaking Olympic and world records during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Combined with outstanding performances on the field, historic broadcasting ratings and digital engagement illustrated the power of sport to bring the world together.

Sport

- 19 days of competition

- 339 events

- 11,259 athlete entries

- 48 per cent female / 52 per cent male

- 2,401 medals presented

- 93 NOCs have won medals

- 205 National Olympic Committees + the IOC Refugee Olympic Team

- 29 refugee athletes participated in 12 sports

-Three NOCs won their first Olympic medal:

  • Burkina Faso, Turkmenistan and San Marino

- Three teams won their first Olympic gold medal

  • Bermuda, Philippines and Qatar

- 836 Olympic Solidarity scholarship-holders competed

  • Participated in 12 sports
  • Scholarship-holders won 27 gold, 32 silver and 42 bronze medals, plus 164 diplomas
  • Teams who received Olympic Solidarity scholarships won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals plus eight diplomas, while three diplomas were awarded to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team
  • 143 Tokyo scholarship-holders (63 women and 80 men) were selected as the flagbearers for their NOC at the Opening Ceremony

- Host nation interest has been very high since the beginning of the Olympic Games

Sustainability and Legacy

- 60.4 per cent of adults in Tokyo now engage in regular sporting activity in 2021, compared to 53.9 per cent in 2012

- Out of the 43 competition venues used for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, only eight were built from scratch

  • 10 Tokyo 2020 venues were temporary and 25 existing, with five already used at the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964

- For the first time in Olympic history, hydrogen was used to power the Olympic torch, the cauldron, the Olympic fleet and parts of the Olympic Village

- For the first time ever, both the Olympic medals and the podiums which athletes stand on were produced using 100 per cent recycled materials

- Some 150,000 initiatives were put in place to create a more sustainable society

  • People donated 6.21 million mobile phones and almost 79,000 tons of electronics for the creation of the 5,000 Olympic medals The 24 buildings of the Olympic Village will become Japan’s first
